'Greatest Customers In The World:' French Restaurant Closing After 36 Years In Bergen County

A restaurant on the brink of hitting its 30th year in its current Bergen County location — and 36 years in business overall — will be closing its doors this weekend.

Madeleine's Petit Paris, a French fine-dining restaurant on Tappan Road in Northvale, said on its website that its last day in business will be Sunday, Oct. 27.

Madeleine's was first opened by Gaspard Caloz, who was born in the Alps of Switzerland and developed a love of cooking at 14 years old, the restaurant's website says. 

After marrying his wife, Madeleine, the couple welcomed two children and moved to New Jersey, as Caloz had taken a new job as the executive chef of Tavern on the Green in New York.

In 1988, they opened Chez Madeleine in Bergenfield, and in 2000 opened Madeleine's Petit Paris in Northvale. Caloz's son, Francois, took over the restaurant in 2020 when he and his wife retired to Florida.

Francois, who graduated from Johnson & Wales, tells Daily Voice: "It has been our pleasure to serve the greatest customers in the world and it makes it even better when they appreciate what you are doing. 

" We were never the fanciest place we just tried to give people great food at a good price and our clientele respected that and blessed us with many years of success. Unfortunately, all things come to an end at some point."

A statement shared to the restaurant's website reads:

"It has been a pleasure to serve our wonderful customers throughout this time. We truly were blessed to have such wonderful patrons that supported us all these years. It was our pleasure to let you into our home and many into our hearts. We consider many of you more than just patrons. Many have become friends and some even family. Thank you for letting us be part of all your wonderful celebrations. It has been our pleasure to serve you. Also, we will miss our employees immensely as many of them have been with us from the beginning of this journey."
